The Methodist Church Nigeria has warned that rising insecurity across the country is worsening economic hardship and threatening the wellbeing of Nigerians.
The synod urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive steps to address the growing spate of kidnapping and killings in parts of the country, noting that the situation has grave implications for food security and the sanctity of human life.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 64th Annual Synod of the Diocese of Ibadan of the Methodist Church Nigeria, held at Methodist Church Nigeria, Trinity, Onireke in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In the communiqué signed by the Synod Secretary, Very Rev. Davidson Olumide Aluko, and the Diocesan Lay President, Sis. Olasumbo Adeola Anifowose, the church expressed concern over the persistent killings and kidnappings in parts of the country, particularly in Benue State and Plateau State.
The Synod noted that insecurity has continued to undermine agricultural activities and worsen food scarcity, urging the Federal Government to strengthen security measures and protect lives and property.
While acknowledging efforts by government to address the challenges, the church called on authorities to prioritise job creation, improve access to healthcare and education, and ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
The Synod also urged that the Federal Government’s new tax reforms, aimed at promoting social cohesion and economic stability, be implemented with fairness and sensitivity to the plight of citizens.
According to the synod, taxes should not continue to be enforced while corruption thrives, stressing that policies must be designed to help reduce the suffering of the masses.
