Int’l Day Against Drug Abuse: Remi Tinubu urges greater investment in prevention

First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased investment in drug abuse prevention, urging governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations and civil society groups to work together to shield young people from substance abuse and the influence of organised criminal networks.

In a message to commemorate the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on Friday, the First Lady said prevention through education, public awareness, family support and community engagement remains the most effective strategy for tackling the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Reflecting this year’s global theme, “The evidence is clear: Invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime,” Senator Tinubu stressed that sustained preventive efforts are critical to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly children and young people, from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.

She urged all stakeholders to deepen collaboration in creating safe, inclusive and supportive environments that enable young people to realise their full potential and make meaningful contributions to national development.

The First Lady said sustained advocacy, care and strong support systems are indispensable in breaking the cycle of substance abuse and dismantling the networks that profit from illicit drugs.

She also extended goodwill to Nigerians and the international community on the occasion, reaffirming the need for collective action in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
