The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Tulia Ackson, has congratulated the Nigerian Senate and its President, Godswill Akpabio, on Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday, approved the appointment of Senator Ibrahim as well as other ambassadors.
In the congratulatory message, Ackson described Ibrahim’s appointment as “a booster to Africa’s voice.”
Ibrahim, who holds the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), was until his appointment the Chairman of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Worldwide.
The senator, who represents Ondo South Senatorial District, was elected into the Nigerian Senate in 2023.
Born in 1967 in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, Ibrahim has an extensive academic background. He earned a doctorate from the University of Cambridge, a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Master of Science degree from the University of Oxford.
He is also a 1990 Law graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University.
While serving in the Senate, Ibrahim was appointed Interim President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva in 2023. He also served as Nigeria’s representative in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and as an Executive Member of the Pan-African Parliament.
During his tenure in the Nigerian Senate, Ibrahim served on several committees, including Appropriations, Finance, Gas, Education, Niger Delta Development Commission, Capital Market, Diaspora and NGOs, Trade and Investment, Housing, and Niger Delta.
Among the bills he initiated and sponsored were those on Bitumen, the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre in Igbotako, the Insurance (Amendment) Act, and the Nigeria Data Bank. All were passed by the Senate.
Ibrahim also sponsored motions adopted on the floor of the Senate, including the extension of the Federal Government’s road construction from Ore to Igbokoda and the convening of a National Security Summit.
