The Vice-Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Prof. Olasebikan Fakolujo, has described the exclusion of private university students from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as injustice despite being Nigerian citizens.
According to Fakolujo, students of private universities deserve to enjoy the same citizenship rights as their counterparts in public universities, adding that the loan scheme should be reviewed for the benefit of all students irrespective of institutions.
The vice-chancellor, who disclosed this during a media briefing to herald the 15th convocation ceremony of the institution, said that the Federal Government should fashion out ways to incorporate private university students into the scheme.
MEANWHILE, a former VC of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Lillian Salami, has said that inadequate funding and lack of personnel are among other challenges bedevilled the country’s public universities.
She spoke, yesterday, during a thanksgiving and book launch to mark the end of her five-year tenure as the 10th substantive VC of UNIBEN/inauguration of the 11th VC of the institution, Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN).
Salami, who also commended the NELFUND policy of the Bola Tinubu-led administration, said the intervention would give relief and succour to hundreds of students without means to pursue their academic dreams.
