The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially closed registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with over 2,030,627 candidates completing the process.

The Guardian reports that this year’s figures surpass the 1,989,668 candidates who applied for the examination in 2024.

The 2025 registration process, which began on February 3, would see over two million candidates participate in the UTME slated for April 25.

The number excludes the candidates who registered to sit for the test at foreign centres.

Additionally, 200,115 candidates expressed interest in taking the optional mock UTME, which is billed for April 5. Among them, 630 candidates have registered for the trial mock examination, which will also take place on the same date.

In its Monday weekly bulletin, JAMB disclosed that with the closure of the UTME registration, preparations for the yearly examination were in full swing.

It stated: “This year, the Board has implemented several innovative measures to deter cheating and maintain the integrity of the examination process.

“These measures have already led to multiple arrests of candidates attempting to use forged A-Level results for admission, highlighting the effectiveness of the new system designed to detect such fraud.

“Candidates are strongly advised to adhere to the examination rules and regulations, and refrain from any dishonest practices during the examination.”

EQUALLY, the Board has said it would begin the sale of Direct Entry (DE) forms from tomorrow, March 12.

In a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB explained that the registration process was crucial to willing holders of degrees, diplomas or A-level certificates who wish to advance their education at their preferred universities.

“The initiation of the DE sales follows the successful conclusion of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) application sales, which ended on Saturday, March 8, 2025. During this period, JAMB recorded a total of 2,030,627 registrations for the 2025 UTME, along with 200,115 for the Mock-UTME and 630 applications for the trial mock,” the statement read.”

The organisation emphasised the importance of adhering to all entry requirements, warning that serious penalties would be imposed on false application declarations.

A special committee, it added, would verify all A-Level qualifications and relevant results, vowing prosecution for fraudsters.

“Additionally, institutions are encouraged to directly verify certificates before considering admissions. Registration can only be done at JAMB Professional Registration Centre (PRC),” it added.
