Kaduna Electric denies sacking 900 workers amid blackout

Kaduna Electric has denied reports that it laid off 900 workers, a claim that led to an ongoing strike by electricity workers, plunging Kaduna State into total blackout.
Since the industrial action began, the entire Kaduna metropolis and its environs have remained in darkness, forcing businesses and traders to rely on costly alternative power sources.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Kaduna Electric’s Corporate Affairs Head, Abdullahi Abdulazeez, the company clarified that the industrial action was linked to a staff restructuring initiative, dismissing speculation and misinformation surrounding the issue.
“Kaduna Electric’s management has initiated a comprehensive transformation exercise to ensure the company’s long-term sustainability,” the statement read.
“Contrary to claims by labour unions that 900 staff members were affected, the company confirms that ‘services no longer required’ letters were issued only to Independent System Operator (ISO) employees, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).”
The company explained that the decision was necessary due to significant operational and financial challenges affecting its ability to meet market and operational obligations.
Abdulazeez further stated that while the restructuring process was a difficult decision, it was necessary to align the company with current market realities and create a more efficient workforce.
“Management emphasized that this right-sizing initiative, alongside capital investments, is crucial for implementing impactful measures to improve operations and ensure sustainability,” he added.
Kaduna Electric also expressed regret over the prolonged power outage, which left some customers without electricity for over 20 hours.
The company assured the public that it is committed to resolving labour disputes amicably and restoring normal operations as quickly as possible.
The management also appreciated security agencies for their support during the strike, ensuring the safety of personnel and facilities.
It reassured customers of its dedication to providing reliable power supply and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the outage.
“Kaduna Electric remains focused on overcoming its current challenges and emerging stronger to better serve its customers and stakeholders,” the statement added.
