Kano broadcast stations under watch over hate campaigns
The Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has said that about 30 broadcast stations in Kano State are already on its black map for propelling hatred and violent comments by political actors.
Head of NBC, Kano zonal office, Adamu Salisu, disclosed the development, yesterday, at a media dialogue organised by Kano Peace Committee ahead of 2023 elections.
Salisu explained that the red flag became pertinent following the dangerous political campaign trend on local radio and television stations recently.
He noted that broadcast media have critical role of ensuring decent social engagement and ethically responsible not to allow selfish political interest to overwhelm peace and tranquillity of the society.
Warning that NBC will not hesitate to sanction any errant station that promotes statements that breach national security, adding that the NBC Code of Conduct must guide practitioners during political campaigns.
Spokesperson of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kano headquarters, Adam Maulu, highlighted the critical roles of media in the success of elections, urging practitioners to be guided by requisite knowledge of the law and electoral guidelines for proper coverage of next year’s election.
Maulu urged journalists to rise above ethnic and religious sentiments while discharging their professional duty, to enable INEC conduct credible elections.
Earlier, Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kano chapter, Bishop John Namaza, appealed to the political elite to guard utterances capable of truncating peaceful atmosphere before and during elections in Kano.
Namaza, who is co-chairman of the peace committee, said the intention of the dialogue was to admonish media organisation to promote peace and educate the electorate on the electoral process.
He cautioned media organisations to be wary of selfish political interests that might want to use their platform to promote violence in the state.
The Head of Secretariat, Kano Peace Committee, Ibrahim Waiya, explained that the committee would soon engage political stakeholders to sign peace accord for the promotion violence-free election.
