The embattled Kano Commissioner for Transportation, Ibrahim Namadi, has violated the government’s zero tolerance policy on drug abuse and other related criminality.
Namadi is presently standing trial before an investigative panel constituted by the state government to examine the controversial bail of a suspected drug baron, Sulaiman Aminu Danwawu.
However, findings by the committee established the Commissioner’s voluntary application submitted before the Federal High Court to serve as surety for the suspected drug trafficker.
The report of the committee, which was formally presented to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, revealed nine key findings.
A statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Tuesday evening, said the Commissioner did not exercise adequate caution before taking the decision to stand surety for a defendant facing serious narcotics charges.
According to the statement, the committee firmly established the involvement of Namadi in the criminal case, even when he was fully aware of Governor Yusuf’s stance against drug trafficking, abuse, youth criminality, and related vices.
The key findings of the Investigative Committee, as contained in the statement, show Namadi deposed to an affidavit confirming his position as a serving Commissioner and pledged to comply with all bail conditions until the conclusion of the trial.
“That he, Namadi, understood that only a serving Commissioner and member of the State Executive Council qualifies to stand surety under the court’s conditions. The Committee found that he had both constructive and actual knowledge of the drug-related nature of the charges.
“There was no evidence of any prior acquaintance between the Commissioner and the defendant. The Committee found no indication that financial benefit or other incentives influenced the Commissioner’s action. The Commissioner did not deposit any sum, including the reported ₦5,000,000, for the bail.”
While receiving the report, Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to transparency, justice, and discipline. He vowed to remain resolute in the fight against drug-related crimes and all forms of social misconduct affecting Kano’s youth and society at large.
Recall that the committee had revealed additional names of government officials linked to the controversial narcotic case at the end of their investigation.
