Gombe loses N38.2m to ghost workers

Sequel to the demand of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has extended teachers’ retirement to 40 years of service from 35.

With the new policy, retirement age in the state moved from 60 years to 65. Ganduje disclosed the new policy during an event organised by NLC to reward exceptional service as part of Workers’ Day celebration at Government House, Kano.

The Governor noted that the decision for retirement elongation was part of commitment to promote and motivate teachers in Kano.

“You are all aware that the Federal Government has increased the retirement age and the length of service of teachers serving in its employ. So we don’t want teachers in Kano to be left behind.”

Responding, the NLC Chairman in Kano, Kabiru Minjibir, applauded the government’s gesture and requested extension of the gesture to civil servants.

MEANWHILE, the biometric exercise in Gombe State has helped to uncover N38.2 million paid to 668 ghost workers monthly as salaries in two local councils and the Ministries Departments Agencies (MDAs) alone.

The state just launched the exercise, using the 84 MDAs, as well as Gombe and Akko local councils as pilot. According to the Commissioner for Finance, Magaji Mohammed, the state has 67,000 workforce, promising that the exercise would soon be extended to other nine local councils.
