In a decisive step toward restoring harmony within the Christian community in Taraba State, governor Agbu Kefas has approved the constitution of a Reconciliation and Unity Committee to address lingering differences between the United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN) and the Global Methodist Church (GMC).
The intervention, announced on Sunday, underscores the state government’s commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and strengthening religious harmony across Taraba.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the Government of the State, Chief Barrister Gebon Timothy Kataps, the newly constituted committee comprises respected clerics and key security stakeholders.
The panel is mandated to foster dialogue, promote reconciliation, and establish a mutually beneficial relationship between the two Methodist bodies.
At the helm of the committee is Rev. Isaiah Magaji Jirape, who will serve as Chairman. Other members include Bishop Foreman Nedison, Bishop Innocent Solomon, Rev. Aliyuda Iro Moses, and Rev. Andemun R. Musa — all prominent figures within the Christian faith community.
Recognizing the sensitive nature of the reconciliation process, the government also included representatives from major security agencies: the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Additionally, a representative of the State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) will serve as Member/Secretary of the committee.
Government sources described the composition of the committee as strategic, blending spiritual leadership with security oversight to ensure that dialogue efforts are conducted in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere.
Governor Kefas reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to peace-building initiatives, emphasizing that dialogue, understanding, and collaboration remain the most effective tools for resolving disputes and strengthening communal bonds.
Observers noted that the move signals proactive leadership at a time when unity within faith-based communities is considered critical to sustaining broader social stability in the state.
The committee is expected to commence its assignment immediately, with stakeholders expressing optimism that its work will pave the way for renewed trust, cooperation, and enduring unity between UMCN and GMC congregations in Taraba State.
