The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), has urged the Federal Government to reinforce security architecture in schools across the country in response to the increasing cases of kidnappings and violent attacks on educational institutions.
The appeal was among the key resolutions adopted at the inaugural Senate sitting of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Ogun State Axis, for the 2025/2026 parliamentary session held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting and signed by the Chairman of NANS JCC Ogun State, Tijani Adekunle, the student body voiced serious concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country.
The association pointed to the recent kidnapping of students and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as a stark reminder of the increasing threats facing educational institutions nationwide.
The Senate condemned the persistent attacks on schools and urged security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering, surveillance and rescue operations to protect students and education workers.
“The Senate expresses profound concern regarding the deteriorating security situation nationwide, specifically referencing the recent abduction of students and educators in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
“We unequivocally condemn the incessant attacks on educational institutions and request that security agencies intensify intelligence gathering and rescue operations,” the communiqué stated.
The students also expressed solidarity with victims of school-related attacks and their families, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all kidnapped students and educators.
As part of efforts to address the challenge, the Senate formally appealed to the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Education to urgently enhance security infrastructure in schools across the country.
According to the communiqué, security reinforcement should cover tertiary institutions, secondary schools and primary schools, stressing that the safety of Nigerian students must be treated as a national priority.
The Senate further threw its weight behind the ongoing push for state policing, arguing that a decentralized policing system would improve response time, strengthen community intelligence gathering and enhance the protection of lives and property.
NANS Ogun JCC also commended the House of Representatives for passing the bill seeking the establishment of state police, describing the legislative action as a bold and historic step towards addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
“The NANS JCC Ogun State Axis Senate believes that the swift passage of this bill will significantly strengthen local intelligence gathering, improve response time to security threats on and around our campuses, and ultimately safeguard the lives of students and Nigerians at large,” the communiqué noted.
The students consequently urged the Senate and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expedite action on the legislation to enable the operationalization of state policing without delay.
While raising concerns over national security, the Senate commended the Ogun State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force for what it described as proactive efforts in tackling kidnapping and banditry within the state.
According to the students, the collaboration between the two security agencies has contributed significantly to maintaining relative peace and security across campuses in Ogun State.
The meeting also addressed other national and educational issues, including support for ongoing reforms by President Tinubu, commendation of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s educational interventions, and recognition of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola’s contributions to student welfare and educational development in Ogun State.
