Kogi State Traditional Council of Chiefs, led by the Atta of Igala, Mathew Opaluwa Ogwuche-Akpa, has condemned recent attack on the convoy of Governor Yahaya Bello.

According to Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onogwu Muhammed, the council made the condemnation, when it paid a visit to Bello at Government House, Lokoja, yesterday.

The Atta said the purpose of the visit was to offer sympathy to the governor over Saturday’s attack by a political group, while Bello was on his way from Abuja to Lokoja.

The monarch strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a criminal act that must not be repeated in Kogi State.

He also cautioned politicians and their followers to ensure their campaigns are conducted without resorting to violence or intimidation.

In his prayers for the governor and the progress of Kogi State, the Ohimege-Igu of Koton Karfe, Abdulrazaq Isah Koto, said the state, which has enjoyed tranquility under the leadership of Bello, would continue to remain peaceful, even as he urged politicians to adhere to rules.

Bello, in his remarks, expressed surprise at the conduct of persons who staged the attack.

He explained that his convoy encountered a roadblock, allegedly set up by protesting truck drivers, who claimed they had issues with a task force.

The governor said after waiting for hours, enduring hardship alongside other commuters, who were unaware of the situation, he joined security personnel in clearing the road.

He said the perpetrators were subsequently arrested and charged by security forces. According to him, the move would serve as deterrent to others who may attempt to take the laws into their hands.

Bello commended the traditional rulers for their proactive and fatherly guidance, expressing appreciation for their visit and sympathy.

He also highlighted historical ties between Igala and Ebira people, regretting that politicians campaigning along ethnic and religious lines were causing problems in the state.

He assured the leaders of his commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.
