Kwara intervenes in child defilement case amid alleged police misconduct
The Kwara State Government has taken over the case of a primary school teacher accused of defiling a seven-year-old pupil following allegations of police interference.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Afolasade Opeyemi Oluwakemi, revealed the intervention during a press briefing at the Ministry of Finance.
She expressed concern that the case could have been jeopardised had her office not stepped in. According to the Commissioner, the young girl was allegedly sexually molested by her teacher last week under unclear circumstances. The victim’s parents reported the incident to the police but were reportedly misled into believing the case was already in court and adjourned.
“The police officers manipulated the case,” Mrs Oluwakemi alleged. “They told the parents that the matter had been taken to court and adjourned. It was only when the parents realised they had been deceived that they sought advice.”
The Commissioner confirmed that the case has now been referred to a special 21-member committee established by the Governor to handle such sensitive matters. The committee comprises religious leaders, traditional rulers, and other relevant stakeholders.
