Labour won’t fail workers on wage, fuel, says Wabba

THE position of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on minimum wage and fuel subsidy is being “guided and considered” in the best interest of workers and the citizenry, its president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has said.

Addressing workers yesterday in Maiduguri, Borno State at a civic reception hosted by the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in his honour, Wabba said the NLC leadership would not disappoint workers across the federation, having been given their mandate to defend and protect not only their interest but also that of the nation’s downtrodden masses.
“Our actions will naturally be guided by what we consider are in the best interest of our members, the Nigerian people as well as the overall interest of our fatherland.”

He also pledged labour’s support and solidarity in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram insurgency in the North East geo-political region
“We commend the gallantry of our armed forces and commiserate with the families of those who have paid the supreme price in the defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria. Our prayers will continue for soldiers fighting in the battle fields. We will not forget the contributions you are making to secure the freedom of our people,” Wabba stated.

To this end, he supported the efforts of the Federal Government in establishing the North East Development Commission (NEDCOM).
“This is a bold step to engender the reconstruction of the affected sub-region which had been destroyed in the last six years by Boko Haram.”

On slain victims, Wabba noted: “We remember the memories and sacrifices of thousands of our workers in hospitals, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and local governments whose lives have been terminated or drastically altered in the course of their duties by the agents of terror in North East.”

In his remarks, state chairman of the NLC, Comrade Ali Abana, commended Wabba’s leadership prowess, noting that such was direly needed by the nation in this era of change.
