Lagos Assembly: Police restore Meranda’s security details

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda

The police in Lagos have announced that they have restored the security details of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda.

Meranda’s security details were controversially withdrawn on Thursday morning, hours before the ousted speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, returned to the assembly with security officials and claimed he was still the speaker.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, said Meranda’s security details have been restored.

He said the initial withdrawal of the security details was due to an ongoing audit of police personnel and firearms.

“The withdrawal of security details of the Speaker Hon. Mojusola Meranda was an exercise of auditing police personnel attached to individuals. But as we speak, her details have been restored. The security around the Assembly has been beefed up to forestall any break down of law and order,” he said.

“The police gave Rt Hon Obasa security details because he specifically wrote that his life and those of his family was under threat.

“It has nothing to do with politics. This audit exercise is aimed at identifying those individuals with security personnel without trace of how they got them. The exercise is not limited to Lagos State Police Command alone, it is happening simultaneously all over the country.”
