Lagos-Collapsed• LASEMA explains hurried burial of victims

INDICATIONS emerged yesterday that the Lagos State government through the Lagos Building Control Agency and the Ministry of the Environment have commenced investigations into the cause of the collapsed bungalow at Orisha Street in Isheri Magodo, Imodium in Ojudu/Berger area.

The three-bedroom flat collapsed after a heavy rainfall, killing four children, who were sleeping in one of the rooms.

Experts said the building may have been affected by heavy excavation along the hills close to it, in a bid to expand the land.

The Guardian also gathered that a mudslide from the edge of a hill beside River Ogun hit the three-bedroom flat. But unfortunately the room where the four children slept was badly hit by the mudslide.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Kolawole Akindele yesterday confirmed that the victims have been buried.

Akindele, who supervised the burial at a cemetery in the community at about 1.45 pm, said this was done in sympathy with the family, so as to prevent them from going though the rigors of the process.

According to him, the burial was conducted after the family, the community head, the police and officials of the state government have signed relevant documents.

The Public Relations Officer of LASEMA, Mr. Adebayo Kehinde, said the government took the decision not to delay the burial to save the family the agony associated with the loss of their children.

According to him, the proper protocol would have been to take the retrieved bodies to the General Hospital before the burial arrangement commenced.
