Lagos commissioner tasks public service on governance demands

As part of its ongoing commitment to professional excellence and improved service delivery, the Lagos State government has launched a series of intensive training programmes for various cadres of officers in the state Public Service for the third quarter of the year.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, the initiative, which demonstrates the state government’s strategic investment in human capital development, has successfully executed distinct training programmes for over 500 officers across key sectors.

Notably, a highly engaging two-day training workshop was conducted for 100 Public Affairs Officers on Grade Levels 13 to 17. The theme of the training was “Strategic Corporate Communication and Media Relations,” focusing on equipping Public Affairs Officers with the tools, knowledge, and techniques necessary to strengthen the State’s communication machinery, manage public perception, and deepen citizen engagement.

In another impactful session, 200 Budget and Planning Officers participated in a programme themed “Budgeting and Fiscal Management.” The session aimed to enhance the officers’ understanding of modern budgeting techniques, fiscal discipline, and performance-based budget implementation, which are vital for sustaining Lagos State’s developmental agenda.

In the same vein, 200 Land Officers benefited from a comprehensive training on “Land Documentation and Titling,” aimed at strengthening land administration, improving transparency, and accelerating the processing of Certificates of Occupancy and other land-related documentation in the State.

All the training programmes lasted a minimum of two days and were facilitated by experienced experts from both the public and private sectors, as well as academia.

Looking ahead, the State Government has finalised plans to organise specialised training programmes for Finance and Accounts Officers, as well as Auditors. The upcoming training for Accounts Officers will be under the theme “Public Sector Finance Reporting Standard” and will focus on improving compliance with modern public financial reporting frameworks, in line with global best practices.

Commenting on the importance of the initiative, the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, noted that the Lagos State Public Service must remain dynamic, agile, and responsive to evolving governance demands.

He emphasised that capacity-building efforts are not merely periodic events but deliberate and strategic interventions designed to equip public servants with the necessary skills and mindset to deliver efficient service.

According to him, the extensive support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for continuous professional development across the service exemplifies the administration’s strong commitment to a high-performing public service.

Also speaking on the programmes, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun, described the training as part of a broader and ongoing effort to enhance the capacity of the public workforce.

She explained that the third-quarter trainings reflect a proactive approach to building a service that is forward-looking, anticipatory, and performance-driven.

She expressed satisfaction with the impressive turnout, the quality of facilitators, and the level of engagement shown by participants, adding that the Ministry is committed to building on the momentum in future sessions.

From all indications, it appears the Lagos State Government remains committed to transforming the State Public Service into a system that is fit for purpose and future-ready.
