Lagos seals 100 health facilities in 10 months for quackery
The Lagos State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has revealed that no fewer than 100 health facilities have been shut down in the last 10 months across Lagos for quackery.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Abiola Idowu, disclosed this on Tuesday during a sensitisation and enforcement exercise in Badagry.
She stated that although the rate of quackery in the state has dropped as a result of the activities of the agency and the engagement, along with the deployment of private stakeholders, to help the agency monitor health facilities.
Speaking on the outreach to Badagry, Idowu explained that the special sensitisation and enforcement exercise in Badagry became necessary due to reports about the high level of quackery in the area.
She added that the agency wants its presence to be strongly felt within the Badagry region to improve health service delivery.
HEFAMAA stated that its monitoring and visits to health facilities are not aimed at finding faults or witch-hunting but rather at raising standards and improving healthcare delivery.
She, however, noted that during the four days, the agency will spend in Badagry, it will not only educate citizens about patronising accredited health facilities but also draw the government’s attention to health facilities operating without the agency’s accreditation.
During the HEFAMAA team’s visit to the Palace of the Akran of Badagry, Idowu informed the palace about the agency’s activities and its planned enforcement exercise in the area.
Speaking on behalf of the palace, the Baale of Tohon, Chief Adeoye Sottin, stressed the importance of maintaining standards in the healthcare sector.
He stated that it is essential for the agency to monitor the activities of health facilities in the area and not compromise in sealing any facility operating below the set standards.
