The West African gospel music scene has consistently introduced many acts over the years, each with their unique artistry and technical flair. And despite the industry’s somewhat competitiveness, we’ve seen rare gems rise to prominence, taking the region by storm.

One of these incredible artistes championing their uniqueness is the renowned Ogbomosho-born Laolu Gbenjo, who has added another feather to his already-filled laurel and distinguished himself with the scintillating praise single, ‘Next Level’.

Gbenjo, alongside his neo-folk band, has consistently captivated audiences with soul-stirring and heart-thumping praise and thanksgiving singles. They say talent needs no introduction, and it’s no surprise that he and his band have graced some of the finest stages both at home and abroad.

In ‘Next Level’, he presents a distinct facet of his praise rendition. Praising the Almighty for His miraculous works and deeds should be free from pretense. Gbenjo grasps this concept deeply and dons the garment of praise with sincerity throughout the track.

The song opens with native percussions and drum rolls that immediately set the stage for dancing. As Laolu Gbenjo begins singing, the piano, bass guitar, and other sonic instruments come alive. Each lyric carries subtle biblical connotations, allowing listeners to draw meaningful inferences.

“Aye wa da, Aye ko si mo / Aye to ku o, Aye ope ni,” he croons, with his backup choir responding energetically. On the surface, this might seem like a simple Thanksgiving line, but it faintly echoes Exodus 15:20-21, when Miriam the prophetess led the Israelites in singing and dancing to thank the divine for their deliverance from their enemies in the Red Sea. The infectious melody and vibrant sonic treatments immediately compel you to grab your dancing shoes.

Gbenjo seamlessly navigates through various medleys in native Yoruba until he reaches the titular ‘Next Level’ song, where he sings, “Emi ti lo next level / Mo ri ola oluwa Lara mi o.” This track is reminiscent of King David’s exuberant dance with the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. At this point in the music, all reservations about how one might look while dancing and singing are cast aside.

If there’s one thing that particularly stands out in the song, it is the way the vocals meld seamlessly with the diverse instrumentation, in such a way that it is finely orchestrated to get you moving while reminiscing about the blessings the Lord has bestowed.

Praise should not merely be a daily routine for Christians but should be viewed as an intentional act of reverence. Gbenjo’s music serves as the channel that makes that happen.
