LASTMA, NPA begin cleanup in Apapa, other environs

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in collaboration with the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) over the weekend commenced a total cleanup of environmental degradation in Apapa and its environs.

LASTMA spokesman Adebayo Taofiq in a statement said the police, Op MESA, and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were involved in the cleanup.

General Manager of LASTMA Bolaji Oreagba said the clean-up exercise on all environmental degradation began after the expiration of notices served on owners of illegal shanties, kiosks, containerised shops, and abandoned trailers in Apapa and its environs.

Oreagba confirmed that the seven-day clean-up resulted in the demolition of several illegal shanties, kiosks, containerised shops, towing of abandoned trailers, and the dismantling of illegal garages.

He said the demolished shanties around the Nigerian Port not only constitute health and safety risks but also served as a haven for criminals who make use of them as hideouts.

The General Manager Security of NPA, Mohammed Jamil Khalil, hinted that the clean-up exercise on all environmental degradation in Apapa and its environs is long overdue.

He maintained that NPA carried out radio jingles and enlightenment campaigns educating members of the public on the need for the cleanup.
