Late Kano corps member brought illness from home, NYSC says

The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) yesterday insisted that a corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died in Kano recently, suffered protracted illness.

This position is contrary to the position of her families that she was suffocated by a strange disease she developed during the regimental exercise.

The First Class Transport Management graduate of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, an indigene of Osogbo in Osun State, reportedly died during the ongoing Batch C 2016 orientation exercise holding at Karaye Camp, about 50 kilometres from Kano metropolis.

A management staff of NYSC in Kano, who craved anonymity, told The Guardian that Oladepo was discovered with illness when she was presented before the camp clinic.

The source equally denied the rumour that she died at the orientation camp, saying: “The corps member did not carry any disease from camp and for the purpose of emphasis, she did not die on camp.”

Although the nature of the sickness was not disclosed, but it was learnt that she was initially admitted for treatment by NYSC doctors and was later referred to Gwarzo General Hospital for further treatment after some complications.

Information gathered revealed that she was discharged and returned to camp two days later. She was rushed back to the hospital after two day, where she finally passed on.

“We tried all possible best to save her life, but we finally lost her. Our doctors on camp did their best before taking her to the hospital. It is unfortunate she did not survive it,” the source said.

When contacted on phone, the NYSC State Coordinator, Abdullahi Yusuf Baba, also confirmed the development and dismissed rumors that Oladepo was pregnant.

Baba, however, declined to give further details on the matter, insisting that the case had already been forward to the headquarters, which reserves the authority to speak further on it.
