The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded a thorough investigation into the killing of Kano-based public commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu, urging security agencies to uncover not only his assailants but also the motive and possible sponsors of the attack.

NHRC Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, made the demand while condemning the killing of Danshagamu, who was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants at his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, on Monday, September 8, 2026.

According to the Commission, the attackers forcibly entered the deceased’s residence and stabbed him before he was rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

Ojukwu described the killing as a grave violation of the fundamental right to life guaranteed by Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

But beyond the killing itself, the NHRC boss expressed concern over its implications for freedom of expression and civic participation, noting that Danshagamu was known for his views on governance and public policy.

He said citizens must be free to express their opinions, criticise public authorities and participate in public discourse without fear of violence, intimidation or reprisal.

The NHRC acknowledged that the Kano State Police Command had arrested two suspects and commenced investigation, but urged the Inspector-General of Police and the state command to treat the case as an urgent matter of national importance.

Ojukwu demanded a prompt, thorough, impartial and transparent investigation capable of establishing the identities of those responsible for the killing, as well as the motive, sponsors, financiers, organisers and anyone who aided or facilitated the attack.

He further urged the authorities to ensure that every suspect against whom credible evidence is established is promptly prosecuted, warning that the investigation must not be allowed to stall or disappear into the system.

The NHRC also called on the Federal Government, Kano State Government and security agencies to review and strengthen protective measures for journalists, bloggers, public commentators, human rights defenders and other citizens whose work or opinions may expose them to threats.

The Commission’s intervention comes as Nigeria approaches another critical political and electoral period, with Ojukwu warning that violence must not become a response to criticism, dissent or public commentary.

He said democratic participation could only thrive in an environment where citizens were safe to speak, question and disagree.

“In a democracy, dissent is not a crime. Criticism must be answered with dialogue and accountability, not violence,” Ojukwu said.

He added that the time for condemnation alone was over, insisting that the perpetrators must be identified, the truth established and justice secured.

The NHRC boss extended the Commission’s condolences to Danshagamu’s family, friends and associates, assuring them that the Commission would monitor the investigation and engage relevant authorities to ensure that justice was pursued to its logical conclusion.
