As part of efforts to improve people’s wellbeing, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lagos, yesterday, donated pints of blood into the blood bank of Igbo Efon Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC), Eti-Osa local council of Lagos. Members of the church also cleaned the premises of the facility.
Speaking to journalists, Director of Communications of the Church, Ikpe George Nkanang, said: “What we are doing today is called All Africa Service Project of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Lagos.
It’s an opportunity for the church to give back to the society that we live in, following the injunction of Jesus Christ. We understand that if we are in the service of one another, we are in the service of God. We are having various events in various locations. In Lagos, we have the blood donation taking place in Yaba and also the renovation of some health centres. We have other people working in markets in Ikorodu, cleaning Ojodu local council premises and Kirikiri prisons.”
Stressing that the programme was targeted at the poor, he said: “If we renovate the General Hospital, the poor will benefit from it. If we clean the markets, it will be to assist the masses. We are partnering with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Ministry of the Environment to carry out this project.”
The Resident Doctor, Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, LUTH, Ogunaike-Quaye Temitope, noted that he who gives blood, gives life, adding that every pint of blood donated would save at least three lives.
