Lawal blames PDP crisis for defection

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has cited the ongoing legal dispute and crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the primary reason for his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Sulaiman Bala Idris, described the defection as a necessary step for the greater good.

The statement noted that joining the APC was a decision made by stakeholders in Zamfara State amid ongoing legal challenges facing the PDP.

HIS successor, Bello Matawalle, has commended the decision. Matawalle welcomed the governor to the APC, describing the move as “a historic moment” in the political history of the state.

“Governor Dauda is now part of a progressive family. Therefore, we warmly welcome him into this fold so that we can support him and work together with all our strengths to ensure a more secure, safe, and prosperous Zamfara State,” Matawalle said.

ON his part, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Muhammad Nakwada, explained that the governor’s decision was a product of diligent thinking, noting that since January 2026, a committee had been constituted to look into the issue.

According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant SSA, on Media, Office of the SSG, Suleiman Ahmad Tudu, the main reason was the irreconcilable internal wrangling in the PDP amid failed attempts by the governor to sanitise the party.
