The Federal Government has emphasised the need to encourage domestic production of telecommunications equipment to meet local and export demands.

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, disclosed at the weekend that this would not only increase earnings, but also largely boost competition among indigenous tech firms in the country.

In his keynote address at the virtual maiden Policy Implementation Assisted Forum (PIAFo) on the National Policy for Promotion of Indigenous Content in the Nigerian Telecommunications Sector, Danbatta said “indigenous content policy generally means any policy that encourages the development of indigenous skills, technology transfer, use of indigenous manpower and indigenous manufacturing.”

‘Facilitating Policy Implementation to deliver Value in the Nigerian Telecoms Sector’ is the theme of the event.

The EVC, who was represented by the Team Lead, Nigeria Office for Developing the Indigenous Telecoms Sector (NODITS) at NCC, Babagana Digima, said with advancements in technology, “administrations have come to recognise the need for their indigenes to participate” actively in exploitation and transformation of their resources into goods and services aimed at economic growth.
