‘Loib Initiative trains out-of-school girls in vocational skills in Ilorin’

The Loib Rural Empowerment Initiative has concluded a one-month vocational skills training for out-of-school girls in Ilorin, Kwara State, under its “Her Future Project,” aimed at equipping young women with practical, income-generating skills.

The training, which took place at the Kwara State Agency for Mass Education Training Centre, provided hands-on sessions in fashion design, turban making, bag production, and shoemaking. Participants were grouped into classes where they learned measurement techniques, pattern drafting, cutting, and production using materials such as Ankara and leather.

Organisers said the project was designed to support vulnerable girls, build their confidence, and promote self-reliance through skill acquisition.

“We believe that empowering girls is empowering the future. When girls are equipped, they become a driving force in the economy and in society,” said Mrs. Love Ajagbe-Ayankola, founder of Loib Empowerment Initiative, during the closing ceremony on June 27.

In addition to vocational training, the girls received mental health sensitisation sessions, refreshments provided by Chronicles Restaurant, and stipends to support attendance throughout the program.
Attendance remained consistent during the training period, and the program drew praise from state officials. A courtesy visit by the Director of the Agency for Mass Education acknowledged the initiative’s impact and called for its expansion.

At the Grand Finale event, top-performing participants were awarded sewing machines based on their attendance and practical performance, while all trainees received certificates of completion.

Trainers were also honoured for their contributions. Ajagbe-Ayankola commended their dedication and reiterated the need to address gender inequality, saying, “It is vital that girls see themselves as capable, valuable, and unstoppable contributors to their world.”

The organisation thanked the Kwara State Agency for Mass Education for providing space and support, as well as partners including Chronicles Restaurant, Arcsage Projects, and individual donors.

The Loib Empowerment Initiative said the Her Future Project has not only imparted skills but also fostered a sense of community and purpose among the girls. Plans are underway to scale the programme to reach more young women in rural and underserved communities.
