Makinde wades into Oyo Assembly crisis, speaks on impeachment rumour

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde

Tension that gripped the Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday eased by evening following the intervention of Governor Seyi Makinde, who moved swiftly to halt what insiders described as a brewing impeachment plot against the Speaker.

Following allegations of a move to impeach the Speaker, the governor had been called to urgently intervene to prevent a full-blown political crisis.

He also spoke on the rumour that the lawmakers were about to impeach him as governor.

The unrest followed reports from a closed-door meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus, which, though expected to be routine ahead of legislative business, reportedly descended into a heated and confrontational session.

Sources familiar with the proceedings described the atmosphere as charged and uneasy, with lawmakers sharply divided over the alleged plot and its implications.

What began as a routine caucus engagement quickly spiralled into a serious confrontation, exposing deepening cracks within the ruling party and raising concerns about the stability of the Assembly’s leadership.

Lawmakers were said to have split into opposing camps, with some resisting what they viewed as an unjustified attempt to unseat the Speaker, while others were believed to be aligned with forces pushing for a leadership change.

According to credible sources, influential figures thought to be operating within the governor’s camp were backing what some legislators interpreted as a calculated attempt to remove the Speaker or compel him to resign.

The move, it was further gathered, was predicated on allegations which many lawmakers considered unsubstantiated and politically motivated.

Although claims of behind-the-scenes orchestration by powerful interests close to the corridors of power remained unverified, they nonetheless heightened fears of an internal power struggle within the PDP in Oyo.

The situation unsettled political circles in Ibadan, fuelling speculation about a looming leadership crisis and prompting urgent appeals for Makinde to intervene to prevent the situation from degenerating into a constitutional impasse.

ALSO, the governor addressed speculations that former First Lady, Mrs  Florence Ajimobi, met with the House of Assembly Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, over plans to remove him.

peaking during the inauguration of key committees set up to drive the state’s long-term tourism development and preparations for the International Tourism Summit 2026, Makinde downplayed the rumours

“This administration will come to an end in one year and one month. So, what will happen next? Well, that is if I am not impeached then,” he cracked. “Today, we inaugurated two committees, the Organising Committee for the International Tourism Summit Oyo State 2026 (#ITSOyoState2026), which will hold next month, 12-14 May 2026, and the 25-Year Tourism Master Plan Committee, a forward-looking committee to create a master plan that will guide decisions, shape investments, and outlive administrations in Oyo.

“This is serious work and will require active participation and my expectation is that members of both committees will put in their best to make these projects work for the good people of Oyo.”
