Maritime union warns firms over staff welfare neglect

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has warned companies operating in the maritime sector that it will not support firms that fail to uphold fair labour practices or prioritise staff welfare.

Francis Bunu, president-general of the union, issued the warning during a courtesy visit by Tim Maguire, managing director of GMT, to the union’s headquarters in Lagos.

Bunu, speaking through a statement by the union’s spokesperson, JohnKennedy Ikemefuna, stated that staff welfare remains the union’s foremost concern and any company found lacking in this regard would not enjoy MWUN’s cooperation.

“That is one of the major reasons the union will not be friendly with any company in the industry,” Bunu said.

He noted that MWUN had invested heavily in training its members to deliver excellence on the job and expects employers to maintain fair treatment, devoid of discrimination or neglect.

Commending GMT’s approach, Bunu assured Maguire of the union’s continued support so long as the company prioritises the welfare of its workers. “Government is a continuum. As long as GMT continues to place the well-being of its employees first, our cooperation will remain firm,” he added.

Maguire, in his response, congratulated Bunu on his recent election and praised his leadership style, describing him as a seasoned labour leader and maritime professional. He pledged that GMT would continue fostering a positive and respectful relationship with the union.
