Markets slowly return to life for Easter shopping

Pushed by the pangs of declining economic power, many traders in Lagos yesterday took the window of the four hours grace to return actively into their bristling commercial activities.

Few days after the pronouncement of the lockdown by the president in the state, the order was adjusted to allow only food market open for business for four hours daily between the hours of 10:00a.m. and 2:00p.m. but since the onset of the new week, market activities is slowly coming back to life despite the ongoing lockdown.

In many parts of the state, Ikotun, Agege, Isolo, Oshodi, Ikorodu, Amuwo Odofin, it was a return to the norm as many residents trooped to the streets to make some transactions ahead of the Easter holidays.

Also, Okada and tricycle operators returned to the streets despite the presence of security operatives on major highways. A tricycle rider who had his park almost at the entrance of Moshood Abiola Model market, Agege, said he has been making some little income shuttling between the market and a major roundabout, which he is using to feed himself and his family.

“We only see the market under lock without knowing exactly the reason. They told us to stay at home and expect government food but throughout last week, we waited and waited, we didn’t see anything. As a man, I have to fend for myself and family and not wait for failed promises of the government.”
