Meagre salaries for construction workers no longer sustainable – CCESSA

The Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association (CCESSA) has called for both improved pay and conditions of services for Nigerian construction workers in tandem with the current economic realities.

CCESSA National President Comrade Ayodeji Adeyemo, who made this call during the association Special Delegates’ Conference in Abuja, regretted that
construction workers are increasingly finding it extremely difficult to survive with their meagre salaries.

Adeyemo, who attributed the development to the floating of the naira and the removal of fuel subsidy called on the authorities to take urgent measures to reduce poverty in the land

The President urged the government to save the construction industry by intervening in the various lingering issues between the Ministry of Works and Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) in order to forestall the current mass sack of the workers ongoing in the industry.

He further urged the government to further put in more effort to address the increasing spate of insecurity in Nigeria, lamenting that construction workers have been kidnapped in their respective offices, houses and on their way to the sites in recent times.

Calling on the members of the association to prepare adequately for life after retirement with special focus on their health, investments and savings, Adeyemo reiterated the need to build good relationships with fellow Nigerians and constant capacity building to fit into an ever evolving, innovative and technologically driven future.

The special Delegates Conference also featured seminar delivery on Strategic and Effective Leadership Styles in Trade Unionism and Building a Sustainable Retirement Plan in a Depressed Economy to build the capacity of the Delegates and prepare them for survival in economic uncertainties after retirement.
