More knocks for IMF, World Bank over water privatisation in Africa

The fifth 2025 Africa Week of Action Against Water Privatisation, convened by Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC), in partnership with Africa Make Big Polluters Pay (MBPP) Coalition, with the theme: ‘Public Water for Climate Resilience’, will be held from October 13 to 18.
 
At a briefing yesterday in Lagos, stakeholders, including civil society organisations and activists, flayed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank for “imposing on Africa a model, they reportedly knew would ultimately fail.

In his welcome address, Executive Director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), Akinbode Oluwafemi, said this year’s event is significant for two particular reasons, as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation, Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, whose participation “affirms the global dimension” of the struggle.
