MPAC urges Nigeria to join South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel

The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to support South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), describing the case as a historic step to hold Israel accountable for alleged war crimes and genocide against Palestinians.

In a statement signed by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, MPAC said Nigeria must rise to its moral and legal duty by standing with South Africa and other nations demanding justice for Palestinians.

“The world has witnessed, with horror, the atrocities committed by Israel against the Palestinian people, actions that bear the marks of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes,” the statement read.

MPAC accused Israel of targeting hospitals, schools, refugee camps, and aid workers, as well as starving civilians, especially women and children.
It said South Africa has shown “courage and moral clarity” by challenging Israel under the Genocide Convention to which Nigeria is also a signatory.

The group reminded the Federal Government of the country’s history of supporting justice and anti-apartheid struggles. According to MPAC, that legacy makes it necessary for Nigeria to join the ICJ case and take a clear diplomatic stand.

“To remain on the sidelines is to betray the principles of justice, humanity, and solidarity that Nigeria has always claimed to uphold,” Kamor said.

The organisation also recalled Nigeria’s position at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2024, when Vice President Kashim Shettima condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for a ceasefire. MPAC said the government must now back its words with concrete action.

“The Palestinian people deserve justice, freedom, dignity, and peace. Nigeria must stand with them boldly and without hesitation,” the statement added.
