Lawmaker representing Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State, Senator Sani Musa, yesterday, appealed to all contenders for the national chairmanship of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to place the interest of Nigeria and that of the party ahead of personal, groups or other ambitions.

The lawmaker, who spoke via a statement yesterday ahead of the scheduled February 2022 national convention of the party, said the convention meant a lot for the country and also the party.

He canvassed that all contenders for the position of national executives of the party needed to realise that the destiny of Nigeria and Nigerians would be in the hands of the national executive that would midwife the selection processes of candidates the party would field for major elections in 2023.

Sani, who is also aspiring for the position of national chairmanship position, warned against doubting the credibility of the incumbent Chairman of Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Governor Mai Mala-Buni to conduct the convention.

He was reacting to insinuations by some members of the party about the sincerity of the CECPC chairman, especially after President Muhammadu Buhari refused to assent to the Electoral Act Bill on the ground that the APC governors of which Buni is one had succeeded in having their way to scuttle the Direct Primary option as against the National Assembly that proposed it in the bill.

Musa said: “There is no reason to doubt Buni or express fear about the credibility of CECPC to manage the national convention. APC is going to have a hitch-free convention that other parties will even emulate.

“I believe that all the indications for the conduct of the national convention are positive. The Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu had assured after his meeting with President Buhari that the convention would hold in February 2022. This is enough time for the states that are yet to hold their congresses at the state level to do so.”

Musa also said that the party’s reconciliation committee was not resting on its oars to find solutions to all grievances in various states, adding: “I am optimistic that the party is on the right course, and the convention will be a success come February 2022.”

Regarding his interest, Musa said his decision to leave the Senate to aspire for the position of national chairmanship was a call to higher responsibilities.

“Having served in the Senate for years and headed many committees, I considered the aspiration to lead APC as a call to a higher duty to ensure that Nigerians have a reliable, credible and acceptable candidates that the would-be national executive possibly led by my humble self will present.”
