MEMBERS of Alfred Komolafe Educational Foundation (AKEF) in conjunction with National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday called on the National Assembly to amend the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Act of 1978, saying it has outlived its usefulness.
With the amendment, the group suggested that JAMB should be converted to Federal Student Financial Assistance Commission and Undergraduate Admission Regulatory Agency.
Undergraduate admission process, they also suggested, should be decentralised such that each university, polytechnic and college of education would be allowed to process admission for its candidates.
Addressing journalists in Lagos on the issue, Executive Director of the Foundation, Alfred Komolafe, said, “JAMB has lost grip of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) system’s intent and has therefore outlived its relevance.”
Any attempt to leave JAMB with what it was not designed for, he added, would be a great disservice to millions of young people who dream of attending higher institutions.
“We, therefore, call on President Muhammadu Buhari to use his exemplary leadership qualities and encourage the National Assembly to rise up to this urgent task. We urge the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to utilise his leadership role and compel the distinguished members of the Senate to amend JAMB Act of 1978. And the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara to initiate a move in the House for the amendment.”
