NANS urges FG to address challenges in education sector
• Condemns lingering strike in research institutes
• Says govt only paying lip service to technological development, research
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, yesterday, vowed and warned that Nigerian students would bring the country to a standstill if the Federal Government failed to address the challenges in the education sector and stop the lingering strike embarked upon by research institutes in the country.
The students lamented that the attitude of the government had shown that government does not believe in the ideology that the country could attain technological development.
NANS Zone D Co-ordinator, Emmanuel Olatunji Adegboye, who addressed journalists at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology in Ibadan, said the government had turned deaf ears to the demands of the research institutes in the country, which had been on strike for over five months pressing home for some demands.
Adegboye, who was represented by its deputy, John Alao, said: “The over five-month-old strike, which has affected all institutions under this research institute, has done nothing but bad to educational system in Nigeria. Students in all these institutions are exposed to skeletal learning and studying.”
He said the conference was geared towards getting the Federal Government to act positively on the demands of research institutes, saying: “We shall bring the country to a standstill if the educational system collapse is not addressed immediately.
“A country cannot survive without research work. Research is the bedrock of any nation to move from underdeveloped to a developed nation.
“Research is the panacea to development of any nation.”
