The Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) has re-elected the Professor Rotimi Olatunji-led 35-member Executive Council to serve another two-year term.

The decision was taken at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held during its 13th Annual International Conference at the National Open University of Nigeria Conference Centre, Abuja.

The conference brought together communication scholars, media professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders to examine the relationship between media, technology and elections in Africa.

A statement issued by the General Secretary of the association, Dr Solomon Oyeleye, said the AGM formally dissolved the 2024–2026 Executive Council before unanimously re-electing the same council for the 2026–2028 tenure.

Olatunji was returned as National President, alongside three Deputy Presidents: Professors Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, Ifeanyi Nsude and Rukkayyat Aliu.

Oyeleye was also re-elected General Secretary, while Dr Ifedolapo Ademosu retained her position as Treasurer.

The six Vice Presidents returned to office are Mr Lanre Agorgundade (South-West), Professor Uwaoma Uche (South-East), Professor Peter Esuh (South-South), Professor Azeez Adesina (North-Central), Professor Suleiman Yar’Adua (North-West) and Dr Abdulmutalib Abubakar (North-East).

The association also announced that its 14th Annual International Conference would hold in Lagos from September 1 to 2, 2027.

The conference will have as its theme, “Modernising Africa’s Trade: Media, Technology and Policy Pathways.”

According to the association, special panels at the 2027 conference would examine the digital revolution and trade facilitation in Africa, with focus on developments in customs, transport, finance, logistics and the blue economy.

At the Abuja conference, ACSPN conferred its fellowship on seven distinguished Nigerians, including Professors Idowu Sobowale, Umaru Alhaji Pate, Nosa Owens-Ibie, Rotimi Olatunji and Stella Chinyere Okunna, as well as Dapo Olorunyomi and Lanre Idowu.

The association also announced posthumous fellowship awards for the late Professors Dayo Alao and Lai Oso.

In its resolutions, ACSPN pledged to strengthen collaboration among communication scholars, media professionals, electoral bodies, regulators, technology providers and civil society organisations, particularly in research, professional practice, public education and policy engagement.

It said the future of African democracy would be significantly shaped by the integrity of information systems, responsibility among communication actors and the capacity of institutions to adapt to technological disruption.
