NASU insists on indefinite strike, rejects FG’s 30% pay rise

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has threatened that if nothing is done before the April 30 deadline for the Federal Government to conclude its wage renegotiation, indefinite strike action would be inevitable.

General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, made the threat yesterday during the opening ceremony of the Universities and Inter-University Centres Trade Group Council Meeting, held at the main campus of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

Adeyemi, while underscoring the importance of the non-teaching staff across academic institutions, called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene and ensure that if the academic staff unions are not on strike, then the non-academic staff unions are also not shortchanged of their 40 per cent pay rise.

He said: “If you give them 40 per cent and also give us 40 per cent, it will not amount to the same thing. There are other gratis that are included in the agreement. So, that is what we are doing today, and we surely have already given notice to say that if by the end of April the government does not conclude the renegotiation with us, we are surely going to shut down. We have been patient enough.

“So, this meeting today is clearly about our rejection of that so-called 30 per cent that has been flying everywhere. We believe that the government that concluded negotiations with the academics in all the other institutions should allow the non-academic people to conclude their own negotiations. Let us sign agreements.

“The major issue that we are deliberating upon today is the renegotiation and the rejection of the 30 per cent. And if nothing is done before then, by May 1, visit our campuses and report what you see.”

The Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Bello, who was recognised for her role in academic excellence and staff welfare, commended her management team and staff members of the citadel of learning on teaming together to achieve the feat.
