Navy upgrades Oguta base with key infrastructure, security assets

The Nigerian Navy has strength its operational capabilities in Imo State with the commissioning of key infrastructure and security assets project at Naval Base Oguta as part of activities marking its 70th anniversary.

The projects, which include a renovated 12-room accommodation block for ratings, four refurbished Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and a 25-kilowatt solar power system, were commissioned on Tuesday during a ceremony attended by military officers, traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials and stakeholders.

The Nigerian Navy is commemorating its anniversary nationwide with a series of activities highlighting its contributions to maritime security, national defence and the protection of Nigeria’s maritime assets.

Speaking at the event, the special guest of honour, representing Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Eugene Dibiagwu, commended the Nigerian Navy for its contributions to improving security in the area.

Dibiagwu also commended the establishment of Naval Base Oguta, noting that it has significantly reduced maritime crime and enhanced stability across the locality.

Dibiagwu also praised the leadership of the base commander for sustaining security operations and fostering cooperation between the military and host communities.

On his part, the Commander of Naval Base Oguta, Commodore Sabo Tanko Lengaya, noted that the projects were designed to improve operational readiness, troop welfare and the overall security architecture of the area.

According to him, the upgraded facilities reflect the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maintaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of responding effectively to emerging security threats.

The commander explained that the newly renovated accommodation block for ratings, would improve the living conditions of personnel, welfare, enhance morale and productivity, noting that decent accommodation remains fundamental to morale and operational efficiency.

He said when personnel are well housed, they are better rested, more focused and better prepared to execute assigned duties in defence of our environment.

The naval commander said the installation of the solar power system would guarantee reliable electricity supply for critical operations, communications and medical services at the base.

He said the installation would also reduce dependence on generators, lower operational costs and ensure uninterrupted power supply to communications.

The naval commander also highlighted the strategic importance of the refurbished APCs, noting that the platforms would enhance troop mobility, protection and rapid response capabilities.

Lengaya said the restored platforms would strengthen the base’s operational capabilities, improve troop mobility and safety, and enhance rapid response to security threats in Oguta and surrounding communities.

He described the anniversary celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the Navy’s decades of service, sacrifice and operational excellence while also strengthening its readiness to meet emerging security challenges.

Lengaya noted that the commissioned projects were aligned with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and aimed at improving personnel welfare and operational effectiveness.

He also attributed the successful completion of the projects to the support of the naval high command, the Central Naval Command, the Imo State Government led by Hope Uzodinma, and other stakeholders.

The naval commander also assured residents of Oguta and neighbouring communities that the projects would have wider socio-economic benefits beyond the military.

“A secure and well-equipped base translates directly into a safer environment for trade, fishing, transportation and daily livelihoods. We remain fully committed to strengthening civil-military relations and will continue to operate as responsible and supportive neighbours,” he said.

Highlights of the event include the presentation of plaques to six outgoing members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who completed their service year at the base.
