The Nigerian Correctional Service has graduated 50 Controllers of Corrections from its training academy in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, in a move aimed at strengthening leadership and operational capacity across custodial centres nationwide.
According to a press statement from the NCoS signed by SC Osho Onimisi Joseph, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, the officers completed the 17th Advanced Command Course at the academy between January 12 and February 20, 2026.
Authorities said the programme is designed to equip senior officers with the leadership, administrative and operational skills required to support ongoing reforms within the correctional system.
The graduates are expected to contribute to reforms being implemented under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, which introduced new frameworks for the management of correctional facilities in Nigeria.
The Zonal Coordinator for Zone A, Olatunbosun Ajibogun, who represented the leadership of the service at the event, highlighted the importance of the training in advancing institutional reforms.
He said the officers would play a crucial role in implementing policies aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening accountability within the correctional system.
Ajibogun also pointed to the introduction of a Performance Management System designed to improve efficiency, transparency and digital processes within the service.
In his address, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, urged the graduating officers to uphold integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
He emphasised their responsibility to ensure that custodial facilities across the country remain secure while supporting rehabilitation and reform initiatives.
The ceremony also recognised the support of the Federal Ministry of Interior, led by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as well as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for ongoing efforts to modernise the correctional system.
Officials said the newly trained officers are expected to take on leadership roles across correctional facilities nationwide as the service continues to implement reforms.
