NECO Registrar, Uwakwe, two others sacked
The Registrar, National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof Charles Uwakwe, has been sacked.
Uwakwe, formerly of the University of Ibadan, was appointed Registrar of the examination body less than two years ago when the appointment of his predecessor, Prof Abdulrasheed Garba, was similarly terminated.
As at press time, no official reason has been advanced for the Registrar’s sudden disengagement.
Sources close to the Council, however, told The Guardian that the sack might not be unconnected with an award of a N25billion contract without the knowledge of either the Federal Ministry of Education or even the governing board of the Council.
Another source alleged that the Registrar was said to have engaged in recruitment of staff without the knowledge of the appropriate authorities.
Two others said to be at the level of deputy director, whose identity could not be verified at press time, were also booted out of NECO for reasons that allegedly border on corruption.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Abubakar Gana, said to be the most senior director, has been directed to take over as Registrar in acting capacity.
