NESA NUN holds confab to boost students’ knowledge of economy, others

The Nile University of Nigeria (NUN) chapter of the Nigerian Economic Students Association (NESA NUN) has organised a national conference for university students nationwide to enrich their knowledge of economy. The meeting also caters for the participants’ thinking capacities as well as their sense of aesthetics, especially in designing of curriculum vitae (CV).

The event, with the, “The Nigerian Economy: The Way forward”, the organisers spurred the students in ruminating over recent events in the polity, especially the economic quagmire besetting the nation. They were challenged to fathom solutions to them.

The president of NESA NUN, Aishatu Kabir, in a statement noted: “ As part of the annual activities of the association, which involves conferences, excursions, seminars and debates, it last year, decided to include in its programme a student conference.

“This initiative came about after attending a series of conferences and realising that students have little or no understanding of what is going on. There is no interest and concentration. Most students were either always on their phones or talking to one another.

“The then president of the association and myself, decided to investigate why this situation kept re-occurring. We found out that most themes, sub-topics and matters related to conferences were usually not at the level of under-graduates. We then decided to have a student conference. This would enable them participate, understand and prepare themselves for other educational aspects of their lives.”

She went on: “It would also teach students the art of research work, boost their curriculum vitae (CVs) and thinking capacities.

“The conference theme was carefully chosen to broaden their knowledge and encourage them to choose any topic of their choice ranging from micro to macroeconomics among others. The conference was open to all students from various schools across the country.

In attendance were the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Husein Sert; former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega and one-time Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman.

The rest included a representative of the World Bank, Jariya Hoffman; International Monetary Fund (IMF) Senior Country Resident, Gene Leon and African Development Bank (AfDB) Country Director, Dr. Ousmane Dore among others.
