Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), Temi Popoola, has emphasised the role of relationships, networks, and mentorship in building sustainable leadership, during a panel discussion held in honour of business executive and philanthropist, Chief Diana Chen.
Speaking at the event, which formed part of the celebrations marking Chief Chen’s birthday, Popoola described her as an example of the long-term value of intentional relationships in both business and community engagement.
“In a world that is constantly changing, one thing that remains timeless is the strength of your relationships and the quality of your network. These connections are the true capital that sustain us, both in business and in life,” he said.
Popoola drew attention to the informal and often overlooked dimensions of mentorship, describing it as a function of presence, empathy, and example. He cited experiences shared by Nigerian students in China who had benefited from Chief Chen’s influence and support.
“There’s a kind of calmness, clarity, and drive that comes from living with purpose. Mentorship is not always structured; often, it is embedded in how people feel seen, supported, and guided,” he said.
Highlighting her role as Chairman of Choice International Group (CIG), Popoola noted that Chief Chen has helped steer investments across key sectors in Nigeria, including mobility, renewable energy, education, and infrastructure.
He added that as Africa’s business landscape evolves, leaders must remain committed to values that go beyond financial outcomes. “True leadership is about intentional impact—shaping people and systems through vision, service, and relationships that endure,” he said.
The gathering, which drew participants from the private and public sectors, provided a platform for broader reflection on leadership, legacy, and the interplay between commerce and social responsibility.
