NIA, SLAN leaders visit UNILAG VC ahead of landmark department launch

In a move signalling collaboration and academic ambition, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi, alongside the leadership of the Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria, represented by the President, Dr. Amos Alao, and Dr. (Mrs.) Fadera Williams, a Past President of NIA, Arc. Olubukonla Atinuke Ejiwunmi, and Arc. Ajayi Williams, accompanied by the pioneer Head of Department, Dr. Nnezi Uduma-Olugu, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola.

The visit served as a prelude to the highly anticipated inauguration of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, part of the newly established Faculty of Architecture. Discussions focused on the vision for the department, regional collaborations, and the strategic role it will play in shaping the next generation of architects and landscape professionals in Nigeria.

Prof. Ogunsola welcomed the delegation warmly, emphasizing the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. She expressed optimism that the department will become a hub of knowledge, fostering creativity, sustainability, and leadership in the built environment.

Dr. Nnezi Uduma-Olugu, the pioneer Head of Department, described the moment as historic, noting that “this department is more than just a new academic unit; it is the birth of a platform that will inspire solutions to the pressing environmental and design challenges of our cities.” She added that the inauguration reflects UNILAG’s forward-looking approach in aligning education with sustainability and global best practice.

The delegation’s visit set the tone for the inauguration and roundtable discussion, reinforcing the collaboration between UNILAG, SLAN, and NIA, and highlighting the shared goal of elevating Architecture and Landscape Architecture education to meet global standards.
