Unveiling and Rebranding Nigeria Initiative (URNI) is partnering with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to mobilise an estimated 17 million Nigerians living abroad to rebrand the country’s image and contribute to national development.
The collaboration is a drive to reshape global perceptions of Nigeria through cultural diplomacy, youth engagement, and diaspora mobilisation.
During a courtesy visit to NIDCOM headquarters in Abuja, URNI’s delegation, led by its Chairman, Board of Trustees, Brigadier General Buba Shajiaba (rtd), said its mission was to inspire patriotism and showcase Nigeria’s strengths and achievements both at home and abroad using technology and community engagement. The organisation presented its maiden publication, Faces of Patriotism, which celebrates exemplary Nigerians, alongside a strategic roadmap for national rebranding.
Shajiaba explained that URNI had already begun expanding its global reach through partnerships with diaspora-based organisations, particularly the Friends of Nigeria in Europe (FON), co-chaired by John Okoro in France.
According to him, such collaborations have strengthened cultural exchange and mobilised diaspora resources for developmental causes in Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that the mobilisation of diaspora Nigerians would serve as a catalyst for reshaping the country’s global reputation and uniting citizens everywhere in the project of national rebranding.
He commended the NIDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for her visionary leadership in promoting the welfare, protection, and empowerment of Nigerians abroad.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of NIDCOM, the commission’s Secretary, Dr Sule Yakubu Bassi, described the partnership with URNI as a transformative step in boosting international confidence in Nigeria.
He stressed the vast potential of Nigeria’s diaspora community, whose contributions to investment, innovation, and diplomacy, he said, were increasingly vital to the nation’s global standing.
Bassi urged URNI to align its programmes with NIDCOM’s flagship initiatives to deepen synergy, adding that both organisations shared a responsibility to reinforce unity and patriotism at home while promoting Nigeria’s image abroad.
