Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has called on Nigerians, including political leaders across the country, to embrace unity, while pursuing inclusive national economic development for the common good of the nation.
Mbah made the call, yesterday, during a special church service at the Government House Chapel, Enugu, to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.
The governor, who described the country’s 64th anniversary as a milestone, added that it is a testament to the resilient spirit of Nigerians.
While underscoring the significant role of the government in sustaining democracy, the governor stressed that the country could only thrive in an atmosphere where everyone is given a sense of inclusion, with a deliberate effort to banish feelings of alienation.
Earlier in his homily, the Diocesan Secretary/Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Very Rev Fr. Wilfred Agubuchie, charged political leaders and all those holding leadership positions both in the public and private sectors to use their positions to work for the common good of the people.
SIMILARLY, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said that Nigerians have every reason to thank God after 64 years of Independence from colonial masters, insisting that the country’s brightest days lie ahead.
The governor, who said Nigeria’s story is not defeat but hope in God, solicited collective prayers for the country and its leaders.
Addressing the congregation at the end of the Independence Day Anniversary Church Service at Maria Assumpta Cathedral Owerri, yesterday, the governor expressed thanks to God for giving Nigerians another opportunity to celebrate their Independence in the face of relative peace and unity, noting that it is a sign that “Nigeria is a nation whose God is Lord.’ ’
He said that despite all the challenges from parts of the country, Nigeria has not been confronted with full-blown war.
