Nigeria should shift focus to entrepreneurship, innovation, says Obi
Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, yesterday, said the oil that financed the country’s economy for decades has now become “baggage for the country hence the country should shift focus towards entrepreneurship and innovation”.
Obi, who spoke in Abeokuta, insisted that one of the yardsticks to measure a country’s development is the quality of its education sector.
Delivering a lecture at the maiden convocation ceremony of Chrisland University, Abeokuta, he said: “Nigeria is lagging behind, when it comes to education as by data of 13 million children being unschooled”
“Not much has been inputted in the education sector, as Nigeria’s education budget in the last 10 years was a meagre $4.5bn, while South Africa’s budget in 2018 was $17bn.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Chinedum Peace Babalola, in her speech, appealed to the Federal Government to extend funding facilities from TETFUND to private universities. Two of the graduating students, Miss Eluagwule Ruth and Miss Onemu Lauretta bagged first class degrees.
