The Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has attributed the country’s economic quagmire to irresponsible policies. He said this, yesterday, at the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehimi in Lagos.

• Falana backs Sanusi’s return, says Kano can’t have two Emirs

The Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has attributed the country’s economic quagmire to irresponsible policies. He said this, yesterday, at the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehimi in Lagos.

This is just as human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has said Kano State must have only one Emir as passed by the Court of Appeal; hence, the 16th Emir of Kano has come to stay despite stiff opposition.

Sanusi, who had been supportive of the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, declared that he was no longer willing to help or engage in discussions about the government’s economic strategies.  He emphasised that he would not intervene to help the government.

The Emir stated, “I don’t want to help this government. They are my friends. If they don’t behave like friends, I don’t behave like a friend. They don’t even have credible people who can come and explain what they are doing. I am not going to help.”

Pointing out that the economic challenges are a result of years of mismanagement, he said: “What we are going through today is at least a necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management. ”

MEANWHILE, Falana said Kano must have only one Emir as passed by the Court of Appeal and that the 16th Emir of Kano has come to stay despite stiff opposition.

Falana said, “But as for us, as lawyers, when we are gathered there, we must tell ourselves some basic truths. Your Majesty, we want to congratulate you on your victory in the Court of Appeal.

“Your opponents say they are going to the Supreme Court as far as the law is concerned, and it is so certain; this is where the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) must come in. Where the law has been settled that the traditional institution is not a fundamental right matter, you can’t say as a traditional ruler, you are going to enforce your fundamental rights in court.”

The senior advocate added that the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction on chieftaincy matters.

“Your Majesty, wherever they go, whether Supreme Court or whatever, you have come to stay. We must only have one Emir in Kano. We can’t have two Emirs in Kano and two speakers in Rivers. This confusion must stop.”

A three-member panel of justices, last Friday, held that the nullification of Sanusi’s appointment was done without the required jurisdiction; hence, it ordered the transfer of the suit to the Kano State High Court.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole held that the matter, being a chieftaincy dispute, ought to have been determined by the Kano High Court rather than the Federal High Court.

Reacting to the development, the principal plaintiff in the Kano emirates tussle, Aminu Danagundi, said the battleground had just been drawn, adding that he was ready to follow up the case in 20 years to come.

Danagundi, a loyalist of Aminu Ado Bayero, the 16th Emir of Kano, also disclosed that he had asked his lawyers to file an appeal at the Supreme Court.
