Amadeus University, Abia State, is set to hold its inaugural matriculation and official opening with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, expected as the keynote speaker on February 8, 2025.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by representatives of the university to The Guardian headquarters in Lagos yesterday, a member of the Governing Council of the Grooming Centre, Ier Jonathan-Ichaver, who led the team, highlighted the institution’s vision, growth and commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and societal impact.
She said the university, located in Amizi, Abia State, was established to produce globally competitive, morally sound, and practically oriented graduates who will drive sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
Jonathan-Ichaver said the university operates as a public benefit, not-for-profit institution, ensuring that education remains accessible and impactful with four faculties and 19 accredited courses by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
“After initiating the application process in 2019 and assembling a distinguished Planning and Implementation Committee in 2020, Amadeus University received approval from the Federal Government of Nigeria and was licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in June 2023. Following a rigorous resource verification by the NUC in April 2024, the University began full academic activities on October 28, 2024,” she explained.
She said that guided by the vision of its founder, Dr Godwin Nwabunka, a seasoned development economist and entrepreneur, the university is the product of his commitment to investing in capacity building to unlock Africa’s demographic dividend.
According to her, the founder, who had a distinguished career in the United Nations (UN), also founded Grooming Centre, the institutional promoter of Amadeus University.
She said the school is digitally equipped to put the student on par with their global counterparts. Speaking on the university’s vision, a representative of the university, Nkanu Egbe, highlighted its commitment to producing graduates who are globally competitive and workplace-ready, noting that the institution aims to set new standards in higher education. He said Amadeus University is committed to fostering inclusive education and providing opportunities to academically outstanding and financially disadvantaged students.
