Council urges states to enact building control laws
Approves accreditation of programmes in six varsities
The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has called on state governments to enact building control laws in their respective states to enhance the building sector.
CORBON also approved the accreditation of undergraduate building programmes in Imo State University, Owerri; Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State; University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State; Federal University, Birnin-Kebbi and Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Agbani, Enugu State.
Chairman of the Council, Dr Samson Opaluwah, said the decisions were made at the end of CORBON’s 123rd council meeting held in Abuja.
The Council, while lauding the efforts of Ebonyi State government for enacting Physical Planning Permit Regulations Law, 2024, the State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2024 and the Ebonyi State Building Control Regulation Law, 2024, enjoined all other state governments to enact such laws and establish professionally-manned building control agencies.
The building regulatory body also commended the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, for assenting to the three laws to guide the orderly development of the built environment, as well as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, on steps taken towards addressing building collapse across the country.
It noted that the proactive actions taken in light of recent frequent incidences of building collapse in the country are commendable.
