Customs cancels import declaration under suspended 4% FoB charge
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the cancellation of all import declarations made during the initial implementation period of the now-suspended 4% Free-on-Board (FOB) charge on imports.
In a statement on Monday, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, explained that the decision aims to maintain clarity, consistency in customs operations, and prevent disruptions in clearance processes.
As a result, affected importers, customs agents, and stakeholders must recapture their declarations to proceed with the clearance of their goods.
“Sequel to the earlier press release announcing the suspension of the 4 per cent Free-on-Board charge on imports, the Nigeria Customs Service wishes to inform stakeholders that all import declarations made during the initial implementation period have been cancelled,” Maiwada said.
The NCS has assured stakeholders of a seamless process, directing customs commands nationwide to provide assistance and clarifications as needed.
The service reiterated its commitment to implementing government fiscal policies in line with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, stressing robust consultation and dialogue with stakeholders.
The suspension of the 4% FOB charge earlier this month followed widespread criticism from businesses struggling with high operating costs.
The charge, calculated based on the value of imported goods, including transportation costs up to the port of loading, was expected to increase import costs, potentially affecting consumers.
The NCS stated that the suspension presents an opportunity to review its revenue framework holistically.
